Introduction

Music is the art of combining vocal or instrumental sounds in a harmonic or expressive way, providing a pleasant sound.

“You get the beeest, of both worlds,” Mandy begins to sing.

“So Hannah fans may think that’s spectacular music,” Jamie commented, “but people who have it ‘down’ for fiddy cent may not!”

Music can have a message or a purpose. In fact, a surgeon (Charles Limb) at the TEDTalks indicated the part of the brain that operates when music is played is the same as that of communication, confirming music is a form of communication.

Music is divided into music theory (mostly composition, but also analysis), and music performance. Most jurisdictions require a requisite level of theory in order to take practical exams.

Examples of music instruments used in practise are the piano, violin, electronic music.

Musical instruments are divided into the categories, of Greek origin:

  • Wind
  • String
  • Percussion

Instruments can be alternatively classified by range, including:

  • Soprano
  • Alto
  • Tenor
  • Baritone
  • Bass

“We get the beeest, of both worlds,” Mandy begins singing.

“So you would be an Alto, Mandy, because you’re just below the Soprano, but you have a tomboy voice,” Jamie noted.

There are various points of style that make a complete piece of music, including:

  • Timber (the instruments)
  • Melody (the tune)
  • Harmony (tonality, key)
  • Rhythm
  • Dynamics (volume)
  • Texture (layers of sound)
