4.A Fungi

4.A.1 General characteristics

Fungi are a distinct kingdom of organisms with tremendous diversity. Thus, there are few rules that apply to ALL fungi.

Like plants, fungi are divided into divisions (not phyla). There are 3 divisions (all of which end in “mycota” from Greek “mykes” meaning “mushroom”): (1) zygomycota; (2) ascomycota; and (3) basidiomycota.

Oomycota, which are slime and water molds, are not true fungi, and have been “denigrated” to the kingdom of protista.
