Reducing to the simplest form

To reduce a fraction to its simplest form, expand the top and bottom lines, and cancel all the common factors from top and below.

For example, $20/15=(5*4)/(5*3)$ . Note 5 is common to both top and bottom, meaning the reduced form is 4/3.

Conversion to mixed number

A mixed number is where instead of the numerator (top) being larger than the denominator (bottom), we put a whole number out at the front, and then leave the remaining fraction behind. For example, instead of $4/3$ , we know this is $(3+1)/3$ , otherwise written as $3/3+1/3=1+1/3=$ which is written as $1\dfrac{1}{3}$
