Reducing to the simplest form

To reduce a fraction to its simplest form, expand the top and bottom lines, and cancel all the common factors from top and below.

For example, 20/15=(5*4)/(5*3). Note 5 is common to both top and bottom, meaning the reduced form is 4/3.

Conversion to mixed number

A mixed number is where instead of the numerator (top) being larger than the denominator (bottom), we put a whole number out at the front, and then leave the remaining fraction behind. For example, instead of 4/3, we know this is (3+1)/3, otherwise written as 3/3+1/3=1+1/3= which is written as 1\dfrac{1}{3}
