2.3 Proportionality

Introduction

An example of a proportional question is, if I know 10% of Mileyworld is 500m2, how large is Mileyworld? To work this out, we say:

\dfrac{10\%=500m^2}{100\%=x}

This is a fraction. We can thus cross-multiply. we therefore know that 10x=500*100. Therefore, 10x=50,000. Thus, x=5,000m^2.

This is the best method to do this question. You can alternatively think in your logic, if 10% is 500m^2, therefore 1% is 50m^2. Thus, 100% would be 5,000m^2.
